Week One

An Introduction into my crazy world of music!

As promised....and requested....I'm chronicling the making of my first CD. This should be humorous and frustrating for all of us. Ha ha!! This week--I just wanna give you some background on how this all came about--and how we're "going about" making this CD with NO money, no experience....and well....just sheer desire to do it!!

One of my best friends.....who shall remain nameless ('cuz he's about mortified that I'm making an online diary of this) is helping me. He has been one of the most influential and supportive people in my life when it comes to learning the guitar and songwriting and music in general. I asked him if I could give him a "nickname", so we wouldn't have to keep calling him Mr. Remain Nameless--he protested at first--but has relented, and will now be known as simply, B.

B and I worked together in radio--and have a mutual hunger for great music (not just the stuff that is spoon-fed to you from every station in the country). We always joked around about actually learning an instrument and making our own music.  I have always loved the guitar---ever since I watched Coalminer's Daughter years ago---I have been hankering to learn. On my 35th birthday two years ago--I decided it was high time for me to go for it. Loretta would be proud!

My husband, Jon, had no problem buying me a guitar (Plus it was on sale for $50--I've since traded that one in for a better one.) when I asked. He actually thought it was a fabulous idea.
He has also been a strong advocate of my "singer-songwriter" dream. But--lets make a side note right here....
I have NO ambitions of being some dog and pony show for the devils and powers that be that are collectively known as "The Music Business". Nor do I think I'm Mariah Carey, Jewel or any other truly talented singer.
I just like the idea of playing the guitar and writing my own songs. YOU can be judge of my talent, abilities and over all mental state when the CD is finished!

So...here we are.....two years down the road. I've written about 22 songs--and have taught myself the...uuuhhh....bare bone basics on the guitar. Yep..... no guitar lessons,  no voice lessons .....and no funds
to get this CD made "professionally". (The price of a few hours in a "real" studio, with people that know
what they are doing--and real musicians to accompany you is so out of my league. It's criminal that I actually thought it was an option at one point!!!!).
But--I'm not giving up. Just think how thrilled my kids will be one day when I'm buried and gone and they
can play "Mom's Homemade CD". What a HOOT at the family get-togethers it will be!!

I mean--listen--I've come a long way from last year. OH yes....you should know that a year ago--I took my son's marble madness construction set--and a $4.00 K-mart microphone and crafted myself a doozy of a mic stand!
With some masking tape and McGyver-esque ingenuity I was ready to go on tour!
Oh yeah---I was livin large.....'til B told me......"Kelly......you REALLY need to give your sons toys back to him."
Seriously....I thought it looked ok--and very colorful. Check it out for yourself below!
